Any materials used for academic research or otherwise should be fully credited with the source. This collection may contain materials with sensitive or confidential information that is protected under federal state, county or municipal right to privacy laws and regulations. Researchers are advised that the disclosure of certain information pertaining to identifiable living individuals represented in this collection without the consent of those individuals may have legal ramifications (e.g., a cause of action under common law for invasion of privacy may arise if facts concerning an individual’s private life are published that would be deemed highly offensive to a reasonable person) for which Johnston County and the Johnston County Heritage Center assumes no responsibility. Researchers are advised that the Heritage Center maintains physical stewardship of these collections under varying terms and agreements. Collections that are given to the Heritage Center are done so under a Deed of Gift agreement in which the donor transfers physical ownership rights as well as, “all right and title to…items without limiting conditions to the Heritage Center.” To more fully understand rights restrictions for particular collections please consult with the Archivist or Director.

Biographical / Historical

James Andrew Wellons, Jr., practiced law for 58 years in Smithfield, Johnston County, NC. Born October 22, 1910, to James Andrew and Florence Lassiter Wellons, he was educated at Duke University, Durham, NC, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC. After graduation, he was assistant attorney general for the State of North Carolina and next joined his father and brother in their law firm in Smithfield.

During World War II, he served in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps in the U. S Army, and during the Korean War, he served in the JAG Corps. He was also active in several professional organizations, the Kiwanis Club, and Centenary United Methodist Church. Wellons married Janice Fitzgerald (1922-2001) on March 8, 1947, and they were the parents of three daughters. Mrs. Wellons was the daughter of John Herbert and Dorothy Bennett Fitzgerald. Wellons died October 28, 2001, and his wife died January 1, 2001. They were both buried in Riverside Cemetery, Smithfield, NC.

Albert Anderson Corbett, Sr., practiced law in Smithfield, NC, from 1929-1990. Born March 19, 1904 to Charles Anderson and Birmah Broadwell Corbett, he was a graduate of Wake Forest and received his law license in 1925.

Corbett served during World War II and was a member of many professional groups and a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. Corbett married Nora Lee Harris (1910-1998) on March 31, 1941, and they were the parents of two daughters and one son.

Rufus Edwin Batton began his law practice in Smithfield, NC, in 1935, after graduating from N. C. State University, Raleigh, NC, and Raleigh Law School, Raleigh, NC. He was a member of several professional organizations, the Kiwanis Club, and First Baptist Church of Smithfield, NC.

Batton was born April 13, 1907, to Atlas and Mary J. Batten. He was married to Clyda Woodard Batton (November 30, 1903-January 31, 1986). She was the daughter of James William and Rena Atkinson Woodard. Batton died July 6, 2001, and was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Smithfield, NC.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The Johnston County Bar Association Papers is one of the original collections that were accumulated in the Johnston County room of the Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield. The library has put these collections on permanent loan and physically transferred the materials to the Heritage Center upon its creation.
