Biography
James Andrew Wellons, Jr., practiced law for 58 years in Smithfield, Johnston County, NC. Born October 22, 1910, to James Andrew and Florence Lassiter Wellons, he was educated at Duke University, Durham, NC, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC. After graduation, he was assistant attorney general for the State of North Carolina and next joined his father and brother in their law firm in Smithfield.
During World War II, he served in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps in the U. S Army, and during the Korean War, he served in the JAG Corps. He was also active in several professional organizations, the Kiwanis Club, and Centenary United Methodist Church.
Wellons married Janice Fitzgerald (1922-2001) on March 8, 1947, and they were the parents of three daughters. Mrs. Wellons was the daughter of John Herbert and Dorothy Bennett Fitzgerald.
Wellons died October 28, 2001, and his wife died January 1, 2001. They were both buried in Riverside Cemetery, Smithfield, NC.
