Biography

Rufus Edwin Batton began his law practice in Smithfield, NC, in 1935, after graduating from N. C. State University, Raleigh, NC, and Raleigh Law School, Raleigh, NC. He was a member of several professional organizations, the Kiwanis Club, and First Baptist Church of Smithfield, NC.

Batton was born April 13, 1907, to Atlas and Mary J. Batten. He was married to Clyda Woodard Batton (November 30, 1903-January 31, 1986). She was the daughter of James William and Rena Atkinson Woodard.

Batton died July 6, 2001, and was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Smithfield, NC.
