General

Attached note reads "This seldom-seen side of the marker on the grave of Congressman Edward W. Pou, who died in 1934, tell more about the kind of man he was than does the state historical marker on the corner of Market and Front streets in Smithfield."

The placard itself reads "I KNOW NOT WHAT RECORD OF SIN AWAITS ME IN THE OTHER WORLD, BUT THIS I KNOW, THAT I WAS NEVER MEAN ENOUGH TO DESPISE A MAN BECAUSE HE WAS IGNORANT, OR BECAUSE HE WAS POOR, OR BECAUSE HE WAS BLACK."
