Mrs. Frances (Fannie) Eleanor Secor Mitchener Hastings Gardner was born to Dr. Elkanah M. and Mary Parker Secor on September 27, 1839, in New York State.

Mrs. Gardner moved to North Carolina just prior to the beginning of the Civil War to teach in a private school in Johnston County, which was financed by the prominent Rand and Mitchener families. She married John Agrippa Mitchener in 1859, who was a widower with two young children. Mitchener (1823-1860) is buried in Oakland Heights Cemetery, Smithfield, NC.

On October 14, 1869, Fannie married William B. Hastings (Jan. 31, 1817-May 15, 1876 - Riverside Cemetery, Smithfield, NC), who was also a widower with two children. While married to Hastings, Fannie gave birth to her only child Mary Florence Hastings (Nov. 3, 1870- March 29, 1946). Mary Florence married Elwood Beaumont Blandy (1855-1917) on January 16, 1904, and they had one son. After his death, Mary married Thomas William Lawrence (1867-1945).

After the death of Hastings, Fannie married Richard Napoleon (Polie) Gardner (Jan. 1, 1849-August 22, 1922 – East Side Cemetery, Tennessee).

Fannie, who outlived her three husbands, died on July 7,1930, at the home of her daughter, who lived in Selma, NC. She is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Smithfield, NC.
