Biography

Hubert Cogdell Woodall, Jr., and Willis Lester Woodall were the sons of Hubert C., Sr., and Hannah Jones Woodall, and they grew up in Smithfield, NC.

Hubert was born November 19, 1918, in Smithfield, and he graduated from Smithfield High School in 1936. He graduated from N. C. State University, Raleigh, NC, in 1941, and majored in textiles. He married Frances Bishop Jefferson (1918-2011) on December 12, 1943, in Lynchburg, VA, and they had two children, Stephen Lester Woodall and Susan Eloise Woodall. His second marriage was to Pauline George on December 27, 1962.

Hubert died April 19, 2016, in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, NC. Willis Lester “Woody” Woodall was born March 30, 1926, in Smithfield. He graduated from Smithfield High School in 1942 and earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from N. C. State University. He also served as an Aviation Cadet with the U. S. Navy from 1944-45.

After working for 30 years as office manager of Hoffman and Hoffman in Raleigh, NC, he retired in 1985. He was a charter member of Starmount Presbyterian Church, Greensboro, NC, and St. Giles Presbyterian Church, Raleigh, NC.

“Woody” married Mary Eloise Fortune on August 20, 1950. After her death, he married Genevieve Medlin Berge Woodall of Smithfield.

He died April 25, 2004, and is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Smithfield.

Scope and Contents From the Collection: This collection is made up of eleven photographs, five of which are of Camp Tuscarora in Wayne County, NC. Other photographs in the collection include two of the Smithfield High students in both the band and the orchestra from the early 1930s. Two photographs are of a plane piloted by a naval officer out of Norfolk, VA. According to eyewitness reports, he had to make an emergency landing in a field near Smithfield High, where a basketball game was being played. The game was paused and the...
