Scope and Contents

This collection is made up of eleven photographs, five of which are of Camp Tuscarora in Wayne County, NC. Other photographs in the collection include two of the Smithfield High students in both the band and the orchestra from the early 1930s. Two photographs are of a plane piloted by a naval officer out of Norfolk, VA. According to eyewitness reports, he had to make an emergency landing in a field near Smithfield High, where a basketball game was being played. The game was paused and the pilot invited inside to answer everyone’s questions. The final two photographs include one of Richard J. Noble’s dog, Rex, and a beached whale that washed up on the shores of Wrightsville Beach.

Researchers are advised that the Heritage Center maintains physical stewardship of these collections under varying terms and agreements. Collections that are given to the Heritage Center are done so under a Deed of Gift agreement in which the donor transfers physical ownership rights as well as, "all right and title to... items without limiting conditions to the Heritage Center." To more fully understand rights restrictions for particular collections please consult with the Archivist or Director.

Biographical / Historical

Richard J. Noble was born in Tutuila, American Samoa on June 23, 1915, to parents Albert M. Noble and Eleanor M. Noble. Albert was stationed here after being drafted for World War I. The family later returned to Smithfield, NC, where both Albert and Eleanor had grown up, and Richard J. Noble attended Smithfield High School. He was a member of both the orchestra and the marching band. After graduation, he attended Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC. On September 29, 1938, Richard married South Carolina native Eva Mae Daniel. Richard was drafted while living in Atlanta, Georgia and attending Atlanta Dental College (now Emory University).

Colonel Noble served in the US Army Dental Corps for 32 years, retiring from active duty in July, 1970. Among other awards, he received the Bronze Star for meritorious service in WWII and was a proud member of the veterans of the Battle of the Bulge. He was stationed at various posts in Germany, Puerto Rico, and Japan, as well as at Fort Meade, MD, Fort Bragg, NC, and Fort Lewis, WA, before retiring from Fort Jackson and settling in Columbia. Richard and Eva Mae had three children: Rev. Mary Ann Pula, Lieutenant Colonel Richard J. Noble. Jr., and Barbara Hastings. Colonel Richard J. Noble died October 31, 2012, and was buried at Fort Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia, Richland County, SC.
