Scope Note: Benson is named for an early settler Alfred Monroe ("Mim") Benson. In 1874 Alfred Mim Benson purchased a 402 acre tract of land on the Smithfield-Fayetteville road. In the 1880s he sold tracts to settlers and then in 1886 a railroad line was established that ran between Fayetteville and Contentnea. The Town of Benson was incorporated in 1887.

This photograph depicts Main Street in Benson as it was in the 1920's. Multiple shopkeepers stores are depicted. These stores include Jake Greenthal's store, A. B. Hudson's store, P. B. Johnson's Store, Milton Smith's store, Eli Turlington's store, Frank Woodall's store, and Preston Woodall's store. In this series of positive photographs is a negative photograph of this item. The positive copy is housed with it.
