Scope Note: Duke University; in 1856, the Methodist Episcopal Church assumed control of the Normal College in Randolph County, N.C.; the name was changed to Trinity College in 1859; school moved to Durham, N.C., in 1891; in 1896 Washington Duke donated an endowment on condition that women be admitted on an equal footing with men; college became co-ed.; in 1924 James B. Duke donated the 40 million dollar Duke Endowment and name was changed from Trinity College to Duke University
