This collection may contain materials with sensitive or confidential information that is protected under federal, state, county or municipal right to privacy laws and regulations. Researchers are advised that the disclosure of certain information pertaining to identifiable living individuals represented in this collection without the consent of those individuals may have legal ramifications (e.g., a cause of action under common law for invasion of privacy may arise if facts concerning an individual's private life are published that would be deemed highly offensive to a reasonable person) for which Johnston County and the Johnston County Heritage Center assumes no responsibility.

Researchers are advised that the Heritage Center maintains physical stewardship of these collections under varying terms and agreements. Collections that are given to the Heritage Center are done so under a Deed of Gift agreement in which the donor transfers physical ownership rights as well as, "all right and title to... items without limiting conditions to the Heritage Center." To more fully understand rights restrictions for particular collections please consult with the Archivist or Director.

Biographical / Historical

Thomas Ruffin and Lucy Woodall Hood were highly esteemed business, civic, and church leaders in Smithfield, Johnston County, NC.

Mr. Hood was born on September 29, 1857, near Rand’s Mill, Wake County, NC, to John Cogdell and Martha Young Hood. When he was two-years-old, the family moved to Bentonville, NC, where his father grew up, and finally to Smithfield, NC. He was a former teacher, Superintendent of Centenary United Methodist Church Sunday School for thirty years, and a druggist. His father was owner of the first drugstore in Johnston County, and Hood eventually became owner of this business. He was a charter member of N. C. Pharmaceutical Association, which was organized in 1880.

He married Lucy Woodall on February 9, 1881, and the couple became the parents of two sons and three daughters.

Mrs. Hood was born around 1861 to Seth W. and Martha Ann Durham Woodall. She was a life-long resident of Johnston County, NC.

Mr. Hood died on January 16, 1940, and Mrs. Hood died on June 24, 1949. They are buried in Riverside Cemetery, Smithfield, NC.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The Thomas R. and Lucy Woodall Hood Papers is one of the original collections that were accumulated in the Johnston County Room of the Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield. The library has put these collections on permanent loan and physically transferred the materials to the Heritage Center upon its creation.
