Scope and Contents

This collection of five photographs includes images of life in Smithfield, North Carolina from around 1923-1940. The first image is of Sanders and Horn Food Store, where Dan S. Kirkman (1908-1988) was the manager in 1940. The second photo shows the inside of the David Pender Store as it looked when Kirkman was manager in 1928. PHC 20.003 is a baseball team photo circa 1920 depicting fourteen students and coach Walter Rice. The remaining photos in the collection show students at Smithfield High School around 1923. PHC 20.003 depicts Dan Kirkman with his classmates, while PHC 20.005 shows his brother, James Kirkman and class.

Researchers are advised that the Heritage Center maintains physical stewardship of these collections under varying terms and agreements. Collections that are given to the Heritage Center are done so under a Deed of Gift agreement in which the donor transfers physical ownership rights as well as, "all right and title to... items without limiting conditions to the Heritage Center." To more fully understand rights restrictions for particular collections please consult with the Archivist or Director.

Biographical / Historical

Dan Shaw Kirkman was born to Sally May Kirkman and James H. Kirkman on September 7, 1908 in Smithfield, NC. He attended Smithfield High School and graduated in the class of 1926. By 1928, he was the manager of the David Pender Store. He continued working as a salesman, and by 1940 was the manager of the Sanders and Horn Food Store. Dan Kirkman was married to Maude Opal Benson (1918-1963), remarried to Virginia Broadhurst Kirkman (1909-1967) in 1965, and was survived by his wife Vivian Celine Magnum Holder (1915-1992) whom he married in 1984. He died December 8, 1988 and was buried in Riverside Cemetery in Smithfield, NC.
