Researchers are advised that the disclosure of certain information pertaining to identifiable living individuals represented in this collection without the consent of those individuals may have legal ramifications (e.g., a cause of action under common law for invasion of privacy may arise if facts concerning an individual’s private life are published that would be deemed highly offensive to a reasonable person) for which Johnston County and the Johnston County Heritage Center assumes no responsibility. Researchers are advised that the Heritage Center maintains physical stewardship of these collections under varying terms and agreements. Collections that are given to the Heritage Center are done so under a Deed of Gift agreement in which the donor transfers physical ownership rights as well as, “all right and title to…items without limiting conditions to the Heritage Center.” To more fully understand rights restrictions for particular collections please consult with the Archivist or Director.

Biographical / Historical

Mary Jane Kennedy Stevens was born around 1844 in Wayne County, NC. She married Needham Bryan Stevens (March 24, 1823-March 20, 1899) on September 27, 1866, and they had the following children: Salley Kennedy Stevens (1868-1900); Amy Jane Stevens (April 8, 1871-June 23, 1937). While Mr. Stevens continued to own property in Wayne County, NC, he and his second wife and family lived in Johnston County, NC.

Needham B. Stevens was married previously to Mary Smith on November 30, 1847, and they lived in Wayne County, NC. They had the following children: David Edgar (b. 1848); Edward (b. around 1850); Henry B. (b. around 1851); William Smith (May 20, 1852-November 1, 1922); John A. (August 1, 1854-March 22, 1910); Samuel (b. around 1857-May 23, 1898); Everett Allen (January 31, 1859-March 22, 1910); Mary Elizabeth (Lizzie) (November 25, 1860-May 18, 1928); Needham (B. Lee) (March 14, 1863-June 13, 1908). Mary Smith Stevens died March 10, 1866.

Mary Jane Kennedy Stevens died March 10, 1885, and her husband died March 20, 1899. They were residents of Wayne County, NC, at the time of their death.
