William Riley Tart Letter

Scope and Contents

The William Riley Tart Letter contains two copies of a letter, which was dated May 13, 1863, and written to William Riley Tart from his son, George E. Tart. George E. Tart was a Confederate soldier, who died July 5, 1863, from wounds received at the Battle of Gettysburg.

This collection may contain materials with sensitive or confidential information that is protected under federal state, county or municipal right to privacy laws and regulations. Researchers are advised that the disclosure of certain information pertaining to identifiable living individuals represented in this collection without the consent of those individuals may have legal ramifications (e.g., a cause of action under common law for invasion of privacy may arise if facts concerning an individual’s private life are published that would be deemed highly offensive to a reasonable person) for which Johnston County and the Johnston County Heritage Center assumes no responsibility. Researchers are advised that the Heritage Center maintains physical stewardship of these collections under varying terms and agreements. Collections that are given to the Heritage Center are done so under a Deed of Gift agreement in which the donor transfers physical ownership rights as well as, “all right and title to…items without limiting conditions to the Heritage Center.” To more fully understand rights restrictions for particular collections please consult with the Archivist or Director.

Biographical / Historical

William Riley Tart was born around 1812 and was the son of John Thomas(1777-1875) and Winifred Hill Tart (1784-1873). He married Lucretia Bizzell (b. 1815 in Wayne County, NC) in 1835. Lucretia was the daughter of Asher W. Bizzell (1785-1837) and Mary Polly Smith (1794-1867). Mr. and Mrs. Tart had the following children: John Allen *1835-1864); Henriette S. (1840-1863); George E. (1843-1863); Anna (1848-1910); Mary (Anna) (1851-1916); Winifred J. “Winnie” (1856-1905); Helen (1858-1927).

Mr. William R. Tart died in 1831 in Sampson County, NC, and Mrs. Lucretia Tart died in 1880 in Johnston County, NC.
