Biography

A long-time resident of Smithfield, NC, Mattie Marsh Sanders was born March 11, 1887, to Rueben A. and Mary Taylor Sanders. She was the sister of Mary Sanders, and the granddaughter of Lucius and Martitia March Sanders.

Ms. Sanders, who never married, was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal church for more than 40 years and operated a boarding home for teachers in Smithfield from 1915-1935. She then became matron of the teacherage at Four Oaks School from 1935-1961.

Ms. Sanders died November 7, 1979, in Johnston Memorial Nursing Center and was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Smithfield.
