Biography

Myrtie Lee Powers, a Johnston County native, was born April 27, 1899, and was the daughter of Monroe and Mary Lee.

Mrs. Powers was married Reverend James Lonnie Powers, who served as pastor of Trinity Baptist Church located in Meadow, and the couple had one daughter, Mrs. Mary Powers Thigpen of Beulaville.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Mrs. Powers was the Meadow community correspondent for the Smithfield Herald, and she authored a book entitled, “Threads of Gold,” which detailed the genealogy of the Monroe and Mary Lee family.

Mrs. Powers died June 12, 1986, and was buried in the Lee Family Cemetery, which is located near Benson.
