Biography

Mary Boddie Sanders Stevens was born October 6, 1858, to Claudius Brock Sanders (1829-1874) and Zillah Elizabeth Whitley (1834-1881). From her diary entries, it is evident that her life revolved around family, church and its activities, and friends.

She married William Smith Stevens (1852-1922), son of Needham B. and Mary Stevens, on December 20, 1877, in Johnston County, NC. The couple had the following children: Ada M. (1878-1962); M. Zillah (1881-1964); Bertha L. (1883-1975); Ralph S. (1885-1932); Leon Gladstone (1889-1954); Erma E. (b. 1894); Everett S. Stevens (July 2, 1903-December 19, 1960).

W. S. Stevens served as Johnston County Clerk of Superior Court for thirty years, and his son, Everett, was postmaster in Smithfield, NC.

Mrs. Stevens died October 18, 1942, and her husband on November 1, 1922. They were buried in Riverside Cemetery.
