Biography
Louise Virginia Blackman Johnston, a lifelong resident of Johnston County, NC, was born October 13, 1917, to Noble G. and Effie I. Mozingo Blackman.
On November 15, 1941, Louise married Henry Makepeace Johnston (July 4, 1911-September 20, 1963), who was the son on Albert Sherwood and Gayle Makepeace Johnston. The couple had two children: Henry M. Johnston, Jr., and Gayle Johnston Ward.
Mrs. Johnston graduated from Selma High School, Selma NC, and Mary Washington College, Fredericksburg, VA. She taught in Johnston County at Corinth Holder and Wilson’s Mills Schools until the death of her husband in 1963. At that time, she took over the Henry M. Johnston Insurance Agency in Smithfield, NC, and ran the business for twenty years.
She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church; the United Daughters of the Confederacy; and charter member of the Smithfield Junior Woman’s Club. Mrs. Johnston died January 28, 1990, and was buried at Riverside Cemetery, Smithfield, NC.
