Biography

Thomas Palmer and Pauline Johnson Mills lived in Philadephia, PA. Mr. Mills was born November 19, 1871, to Thomas and Mary Scott Mills, in Philadelphia. He was a machinist by profession and credited with making the first ice cream freezer.

Pauline Johnson Mills was born May 4, 1871, in Johnston County, North Carolina, to Starling and Mattie Snipes Johnson. It was reported in The Smithfield Herald in 1890 that she ran away from home with the help of an African-American man and moved to Philadelphia, where she met her husband. She and Thomas Mills were married September 18, 1911.

After Mr. Mills died on June 29, 1933, Polly returned to North Carolina. She died on January 3, 1962, and was buried at Sunset Memorial Park, Smithfield, Johnston County, North Carolina.
