Biography
Reverend John James Harper was founder of Barton College (originally named Atlantic Christian College) in Wilson, NC, and was a minister in the Disciples of Christ denomination.
Born on April 10, 1841, in Bentonville, Johnston County, NC, to John Harper III (1803-1892) and Amy Ann Woodard (1820-1900), Reverend Harper married Aritta Henrietta Anderson Daniel (September 27, 1842-July 18, 1939) on May 1, 1862.
The couple had the following children: Wilton Cebon (1870-September 19, 1942); Myrtle Lela (1873-1858); Annie Frances (1875-1940); James W. (1879-1949); John Edgar (b. 1864).
John James Harper died January 17, 1908, and Mrs. Harper on July 18, 1939. They were both buried in Riverside Cemetery, Johnston County, Smithfield, NC.
Wilton Cebon Harper was born in Bentonville on January 4, 1870, to John J. and Aritta Anderson Harper. He married Annie Netta Strickland (April 8, 1877-June 23, 1951) on January 21, 1904, and they had the following children: Annie Anderson (November 22, 1904-June 29, 2005/wife of Exum Anderson Chamblee); Mary Wilton (b. August 21, 1906); Mamie S. Harper Wiggs (August 16, 1911-May 31, 1991).
Wilton C. Harper died September 19, 1942, in Wilson, NC, and was buried in Maplewood Cemetery, Wilson.
