Biography

Evelyn Bishop was a former teacher, librarian for the Library of Johnston County and Smithfield from 1950-1961, and a civic and church leader.

Bishop was born August 14, 1903, in New York City, to William Edward and Jessie M. Bishop and was reared in Cleveland Heights, OH. She obtained a B.A. from Hiram College, Hiram, OH, and a Library Science Degree from Western Reserve School of Library Science, Cleveland, OH. When she moved to Smithfield for her new position with the Library, her parents also moved to North Carolina. She joined First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School, and was a member of various organizations, which included the Smithfield Woman’s Club and the Aeolian Music Club.

Bishop died from cancer on September 19, 1961, and was buried at Montlawn Cemetery in Raleigh, NC.
