Biography

Henry Lewis Graves was born October 24, 1847, to Calvin E. and Caroline Foust Graves. At the age of 16, he joined the Confederate Army and, until Lee’s surrender, was a body guard for Jefferson Davis. Graves married Mary Elizabeth Whitley (born December 2, 1850 to K.M.C. and Sarah Elizabeth McKinney) on May 18, 1870, and the couple had three children: Callie G. Thomas (July 9, 1880-February 3, 1967); Ida Graves Hadley (1872-1951); Henry L. Graves, Jr. (1885-1920). Graves and his wife were charter members of First Presbyterian Church, Smithfield, NC. He died November 22, 1920, and his wife on January 2, 1917. They were both buried in Riverside Cemetery, Smithfield, NC.
