Biography

Dr. Thel Hooks was a highly regarded physician who practiced medicine in Smithfield, Johnston County, NC, for 34 years. His office was located in the Hood Building.

Dr. Hooks was born December 22, 1876, to Cullen D. and Arah Hooks, in Fremont, Wayne County, NC, and was educated at Oak Ridge Institute, the University of North Carolina, and the Medical College of Virginia.

A Captain in the Medicap Corps of 105 Engineers, World War I, he was wounded in 1918 and served in Europe until the Armistice was signed.

He married Eva Woodall, born September 4, 1884, to Thomas Ruffin and Lucy Hood, on December 31, 1903.

The couple had seven children: Jonathan Thel (1904-1985); Arah Lucy (1906-1978); Thomas Hood (1908-1911); William Arthur (1909-1988); Dorothy Hood (1913-2003); Cullen Dewitte (1916-1982); David Woodall (1920-2008).

Dr. Hooks died February 18, 1935, and Mrs. Hooks on November 30, 1979. They are both buried at Riverside Cemetery, Smithfield, NC.
