Biography

Bennie Hockaday was a life-long resident of Johnston County, NC, and one of the first Johnstonians employed under the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA) for public-service jobs.

Hockaday was born December 3, 1901, in Johnston County to Duncan and Georgianna Snead Hockaday. A retired groundskeeper for the Johnston County Mental Health Center, Smithfield, NC, he rode a bicycle to work every day and was a faithful member of St. Peter’s Church of Christ. Hockaday was married to Mrs. Ella Mae Shaw Hockaday, and they had five daughters: Mrs. Rosa H. Sanders, Mrs. Dora H. Albriton, Mrs. Georgianna H. Loney, Mrs. Annie H. Terezo, and Mrs. Thelma H. White.

Hockaday died on January 9, 1984, and is buried in Selma Memorial Gardens, Selma, NC.
