Hulth, Peter Thorleif, Jr., 1924-2011
Biography
Peter Thorleif Hulth, Jr., received an AB Journalism Degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC, in 1953, and was a well-known staff writer for The Smithfield Herald from 1955 until his retirement in 1992.
Hulth was born November 10, 1924, in Columbia, SC, to Peter Thorleif and Nellie Lilly Hulth. He joined the Navy in 1943 and spent three tours of military duty during World War II and the Korean War. In 1948, he taught NATO sailors how to operate radio receivers and transmitters and served as rear admiral and staff radioman.
Hulth married Mary Ann Ziebol in 1949. She was a Navy nurse during the Cold War and native of Minnesota. The couple had five children: Peter T. Hulth III (Rocky); Paul Hansen Hulth; Pamela Teresa (Suni) Hulth Lacklen; Margaret Lynn Hulth Tippett; Patricia Ann Hulth.
Hulth died December 20, 2011.
