Biography

William Cullen Benson was born May 18, 1840, in Johnston County, NC, and was the son of William Henry and Louisa Benson.

His family appears in the 1850 census in dwelling 204. His older brother John is 12 years old, William himself is 10 years old, his younger siblings are James who is 8 years old, Charles who is 7 years old, Alfred who is 5 years old, Sarah who is 3 years old and Benjamin who is 1 year old.

Benson enlisted with the Confederacy on June 12, 1861, with the 24th Infantry. He became a Prisoner of War on April 1, 1865 in Five Forks, VA, and was released June 24, 1865.

Benson married Sarah “Sallie” Ann Dixon on June 14, 1866, and they were the parents of: Eliza Nolia (b. 1867); Estella M. (b. 1869); Alvarada (b. 1871); Cheson B. (b. 1873); Jeptha (b. 1879). He was a farmer, and the family lived in Elevation Township, Johnston County, NC.

William C. Benson died March 21, 1913, and Sarah Benson died January 12, 1919. They were both buried at Elevation Church Cemetery in Benson, NC.

W. J. Newby’s name appears on a Promissory Note dated October 14, 1894, in the amount of $1,000.00 for W. J. Newby from J. H. Daughtry.

The Benson-Newby Papers contain loan notes, receipts, mortgage documents, and correspondence.

Specifically included are: land records from an "A. E. Benson"; various tax records payed by W. C. Benson; a letter from Ashley Horne to William C. Benson from 1900; and there are several records documenting W. C. Bensons's release from being a Prisoner of War.
