Biography

Throughout Reverend D. H. (Daniel Herndon) Tuttle’s career, he was an attorney, part owner of the “Piedmont Press” newspaper, and a highly esteemed Methodist minister.

Reverend Tuttle was born June 27, 1857, in Caldwell County, NC, to Benedict (Bobbit) Marcus and Mary Ann Tuttle and grew up on a farm. He attended Trinity College (now Duke University) from 1876-1877, and after college he studied law under former Judge C. A. Cilly of Lenoir County, NC. After receiving his law license, he practiced law from 1880-1883 in Lenoir, NC. During this time, he also purchased half interest in “Piedmont Press” of Hickory, NC. After receiving the call to minister, he attended Vanderbilt University for his theological training. His first church as pastor was located in Southport, NC, where he met and married Ella Emilea Westcott in August, 1884. The couple had seven children. Mrs. Tuttle died in 1922 while Reverend Tuttle was pastor of Centenary United Methodist Church in Smithfield, NC.

Reverend Tuttle retired in 1926 from active ministry and made his home in Smithfield, where he was a member of the Kiwanis Club. He died April 8, 1989, in Rowan County, NC, and is buried in Riverside Cemetery in Smithfield, NC.
