Biography
Title to the bed of Black Creek between Holt Lake dam and thread waters of Holt Lake, as well as title of property lying within the higher water mark of Holt Lake was in question and was heard before a Superior Court Judge in 1990. Judgement of the court in this case determined George Brannan to be owner of the largest portion of Holt Lake from the most recent deed into Brannan’s, Inc., which ties to grants from the State of North Carolina dated in 1798. George Brannan was born March 3, 1932, to Wade and Hannah Brannan. He obtained a degree in Mechanical Engineering from N. C. State University, was a Captain in the U. S. Army, and a member of the N. C. House of Representatives (1980-1988). After moving back to Johnston County, he became President of Brannon’s, Inc. and Holt Lake Nursery, Inc. Mr. Brannan was married for 50 years to Mary Jane Warrick (November 17, 1931-July 1, 2004), and the couple had two children: Beth and Wyatt. Brannan died December 20, 2008.
