Biography

Elizabeth Wilder Joyner (Joiner) was born around 1815 to Irwin Irvin Wilder (1775-1837) and Winifred Avera (1780-1848). She married Reddin Joyner on November 26, 1838, in Johnston County, North Carolina. He was the son of John Joyner (1780-1849) and Zilpa Hinnant (1784-1850).

Elizabeth and Reddin Joyner had one son, who was born in 1840, and named John J. Joyner. John enlisted with the Confederate Army as a private on June 24, 1861, and was held as a prisoner of war at the Prisoner’s Camp, Elmira, NY.

Mrs. Joyner died in 1890 and was buried in the family cemetery between Lake Wendell and Archers Lodge. Her husband died in October, 1842.

The Elizabeth Joyner Paper contains two copies of a handwritten letter dated December 10, 1864, from her son, John J. Joyner, who was imprisoned in the Prisoner’s Camp, Elmira, NY.
