Biography
Daniel Decatur Emmett was a songwriter, entertainer, and founder of the first troupe of blackface minstrel tradition. His version of “Dixie,” written in 1862, was the most popular and was intended to reflect the mood of the U.S. in the late 1850s. Emmett was born October 29 1815, in Vernon, Knox County, OH. He married Catherine Rives in 1853. After her death in 1875, he married Mary Bird in 1879.
