Biography

Robert Darius Lunceford was born August 23, 1832 in Johnston County, NC, to David and Nancy Gulley Lunceford.

Lunceford married Cornelia Ann Powell (July 7, 1838-July 21, 1900) on January 7, 1857, in Johnston County, NC. The couple had the following children: David Telfair (1858-1928); Susan Della (1860-1918); Robert L. (b. 1866); Charles Napoleon (1862-1865); Adin Powell (1870-1925); Danielle Powell (1867-1868); Cornelia Ann (1872-1940); Minerva S. (1875-1942).

Lunceford enlisted in the Confederacy on February 25, 1862, as a Captain in the 50th Infantry, Company C. After his muster date of April 21, 1862, he was wounded on June 30, 1862, at Malvern Hill, VA. He mustered out of the Army on December 15, 1862.

Captain Lunceford died on April 8, 1900, and was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Smithfield, NC.
