Biography

Rev. James P. Smith, a retired Presbyterian minister and historian, authored many of the articles concerning the history of Johnston County, which are found in this scrapbook.

Smith was born June 7, 1878, in Virginia to Rev. James Powers Smith, II and Agnes Lucy Smith. A graduate of the University of Virginia and the Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, VA, he came to Smithfield, NC, in the early 1930s as a Presbyterian pastor. He pastored Smithfield’s First Presbyterian Church, Oakland Presbyterian Church, and Progressive Presbyterian Church.

Smith married Annie Higgenbatham, and the couple had four daughters and one son. He died on December 6, 1953, at his home in Smithfield, NC, and is buried at Sunset Memorial Park, Smithfield.
