Johnston and Sampson School House Company Records

 Organization

Biography

The Johnston and Sampson School House Joint Stock Association was responsible for building Glenwood High School, which may have been the first high school house in Johnston County.

The Association was made up of local farmers along the Johnston-Sampson line in 1882, who wanted their children to have an education and better life. The building was used until around 1904, when it was abandoned and a new building was erected.

An interesting fact about the school is that it was built at the intersection of Old Raleigh-Wilmington and Goldsboro-Averasboro Roads over which just sixteen years earlier Sherman’s troops marched on their way to the Battle of Bentonville.
